Current Status (Updated April 30, 2012)
The city has selected SKC Construction as the 2012 season contractor for the City’s Joint and Crack Sealing Program. The contractor is expected to begin working on the crack sealing on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
Program Description
The Joint and Crack Sealing Program is a very cost effective program that helps maintain and extend the life of the city's streets. Crack sealing is performed each year on a number of city streets to prevent water from entering the pavement and reduce the spread of cracking.
The program includes cleaning and sealing cracks, voids or joints in the street that are two inches (2”) in width or less with either a fiber-reinforced asphalt cement or a rubberized crackfilling product.
Construction Impacts
Crack sealing is a mobile operation that results in minimal disturbance to residences, businesses and motorists, however, lane closures may be required when the contractor is working along major thoroughfares. The roadways will remain open to at least one lane of traffic in each direction at all times and any lane closures will occur between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to minimize the impact during peak travel times. Parking may be restricted for short periods of time when the contractor is working along local streets.
The contractor may use sand to protect freshly-placed sealant and may produce some small debris through the crack sealing process. The contractor will clean the streets to remove the sand and debris within three days of completing the crack sealing.
Project Background
The Joint and Crack Sealing Program is a component of the City of Naperville’s annual Street Maintenance Improvement Program (MIP). The MIP consists of four major categories of projects:
- Preventive Maintenance
- Rehabilitation
- Renovation
- Reconstruction
The city annually evaluates its roadways and selects cost effective maintenance treatments to enhance and extend the useful life of the pavement.
