Current Status

While the City Council and the Transportation Advisory Board approved the south alignment for proposed improvements to North Aurora Road in 2009, the project is currently awaiting funding as of 2012.  The City of Naperville continues to review funding opportunities for all city road projects and more information about the scheduling of this project will be posted here when available.

Project Description

Proposed improvements to North Aurora Road between Frontenac Drive and Weston Ridge Drive consist of widening the existing 3-lane road to accommodate two traffic lanes in each direction with a center turn lane (5 lanes in total), a pedestrian sidewalk, bicycle accommodations, and drainage enhancements.

A preliminary engineering study was conducted to evaluate various alignments to accomplish these improvements while studying the potential impacts to the environment, access points, right-of-way needs, highway geometric constraints, drainage considerations, and soil conditions.

Public Involvement

Focus Group Meetings
City staff and project consultant s conducted separate focus group meetings with the businesses and the residents along North Aurora Road to introduce the project, obtain input and listen to concerns.

Online Survey
An online survey was conducted as part of the initial public input process through the City of Naperville’s website. The City received 145 survey responses from residents, commuters and local businesses. The results of this survey are presented below as exhibit A:

Public Open House and Meetings
The cities of Naperville, Aurora and Naperville Township held a joint public open house to obtain community input on the proposed improvements as well as the recommended alignment for the widening and improvement of the North Aurora Road underpass at the EJ&E/CN railroad tracks. The underpass, which is located immediately to the west, is being studied as a separate project and more information can be found here.

The City of Naperville and Naperville Township also held another public meeting on the project in 2011.

Background

North Aurora Road is a minor arterial road with an average daily traffic of approximately 22,000 vehicles. The road is a primary connection between the cities of Naperville and Aurora and provides access to numerous businesses and subdivisions.  North Aurora Road between Frontenac Drive and Weston Ridge Drive is the only remaining section of this road with a single lane for each direction for several miles on either side which creates a bottleneck condition for traffic.

The existing traffic exceeds the capacity of the current roadway. Traffic volume is expected to reach nearly 30,000 vehicles per day over the next 20 years.
