In an effort to provide better service to the city's customers and residents, the City of Naperville's Sign Code was updated in 2008. Click here to view the updated code. The city's Sign Code was created with the following goals:
- Create a user-friendly code
- Provide the appropriate amount of signage for businesses within the community
- Reduce variance requests
- Establish uniform ground sign regulations
- Address chronic sign issues
- Strengthen penalties
- Include electronic message board signage into the city’s landscape.
Are you a business or organization with an Electronic Messaging Board?
The following rules included in the Sign Code apply to businesses and organizations that use Electronic Message Boards, or EMBs, within the City of Naperville.
- EMBs, cannot exceed fifty percent of the permitted area of a monument sign.
- Programming should be done so that a static message does not change more than once every ten seconds.
- Temporary signs cannot contain changeable signage.
Naperville Code Enforcement Officers routinely review EMBs in the city to ensure compliance with city regulations, and signs can be inspected without warning any day of the week.
If it is suspected that an EMB is in violation of city code, a site check will be conducted to confirm there is a violation before a letter is sent to the owner/business responsible for maintaining the sign. The letter will explain the violation and assign a compliance date. If the sign continues to be in violation after the compliance date, a citation will be issued to the property owner. Each day the violation continues constitutes a new violation and the fine can range from $100 to $500 for each day the sign is not in compliance with city codes.
